Samsung confirmed to its many millions of international Galaxy S III users earlier this year that their handsets would not be receiving an Android 4.4 KitKat update. Fortunately for those still clinging onto the device, third-party developers have taken matters into their own hands.

Samsung told those with an international Galaxy S III — with the “GT-I9300” model number — that their devices couldn’t run KitKat smoothly because it has just 1GB of RAM. However, the software has been made available to other devices with just 512MB of RAM, and it’s been running pretty flawlessly. That suggests that it is Samsung’s bloated TouchWiz UI — not KitKat itself — that’s the problem.

But a KitKat update that was made available to Galaxy S III owners in Korea, whose “E210S” devices have 2GB of RAM, has now been ported to other devices. XDA Developers member “arter97” and a bunch of friends managed to get the software running on an internal Galaxy S III in “just a few hours,” XDA reports — and users can download their ROM now.

Just like any other custom firmware, you simply need to flash the ZIP using a custom recovery. But bear in mind that any unofficial port like this one could come with problems that render your device or certain features unusable. Having said that, feedback on the XDA forum from those who have already installed it suggests it’s pretty stable and free from any major issues.

To try out the software for yourself and to breathe new life into your Galaxy S III, follow the source link below where you’ll find the files you need along with detailed installation instructions.
